The 8BitCADE XL is an educational, DIY Game Console that you create to learn in a fun and rewarding way – learn electronics & programming while playing your favourite retro games!

The XL comes as a DIY kit that, once built, can play retro-themed games and be programmed via Arduino.

The XL takes advantage of the 3 phases of our curriculum: Make, Learn, Game. Below is a brief overview of how each section works:

Firstly, you build your DIY console. Here you have access to a Make Guide + Make Video which guides you, step by step, on how to assemble and solder your new console. The Make Guide includes the part dictionary, which goes over all of the electronics used in the console and how they work – to teach you the basics of electronics - and the soldering guide, which teaches you the basics of soldering - a core STEM skill. We also provide a Visual Parts Guide which can be used by you to ensure you have all of the correct parts in your kit & to help you identify the part by picture!

The Learn section caters for the coding side of the console, where we have the Arduino Introductory booklet that covers the basics of Arduino using the console. After that, we advise beginners to head on over and explore the other foundation tutorials (this covers some basic principles of coding such as arrays, functions and even classes). After that, you have access to the Console specific projects where you can learn to make a simple Pong game or even Tetris!

The Game section gives you access to over 250+ games to download and play. You can also view the games source code to take a look at how the games are coded and even make adjustments to the games to suit your needs - allowing you to endlessly explore and innovate.
